For the second week in a row I’ve missed speed skating. I’m completely bummed about it but by the time 9:30 rolls around each night I am dead in the water. This is not just speed skating night, this is every night.
The problem is I don’t think I’m eating enough now to cover the calories I’m expending. I’m certainly not losing any weight, although there is a bunch of shifting going on in my body. I feel like I need someone to look at my workout schedule and figure out an eating program that will keep me on track and get me back on the speed skating short track.
Any takers?

this is a decent protein calculator and should help you figure out how much protein you should be eating per day. also you have to eat a serious amount of protein at every meal, especially breakfast.
Are you eating with emphasis on protein and veg? Since my DH and I cut way back on the wheat in particular, (sugar is moderate in our house so not an issue), increased protein (especially at breakfast time), and loaded up on high-water content veg (which is tough but not impossible in Canada in winter) we’ve had much better energy levels. Having said that, no one in their right mind would even suggest to me to go do active exercising past 8 pm…maybe your body is just not a night-exercise type.
The other thing I can think of (that my naturopath doc recommended) is test your adrenals. Mine were running on nothing (like no gas in the car) and a jar of special supplements helped me kick back to normal energy levels (along with protein-rich diet).
Or perhaps it’s just the winter blues? I mean, it’s dark at 4ish…
Good luck! Hope you get ‘back on the horse’ so to speak.
If you’re learning to swim, you are spending a bazillion calories doing that. It’s very tiring at first, no wonder you’re tired and going to bed early. Once you get the hang of it, you will swim further, faster, and spend much less energy than you do now. Then you’ll go back to speed skating and set new records, while staying up at night, drinking wine, and watching old movies.
I read your title and really expected to see the thing you miss most was a wine bottle!
It’s a late night for me if I’m in bed past 9:30. But I’m 11 months pregnant, so no amount of protein of complex carbohydrates are going to get me on skates at 10 p.m. Hope you find what you’re looking for!
